Welcome to The Alberta Lounge, the club where Canadian jazz legend Oscar Peterson was first discovered in Montreal; Alberta – which also happens to be the name of the province where vocalist Deanne Matley grew up and started her music career ten years ago.

Inspired by the Canadian jazz great, The Alberta Lounge features two new tunes of Matley’s: The Alberta Lounge and If You Were Here Today. She also made sure to include two Peterson originals, the haunting Hymn To Freedom and the tender ballad When Summer Comes. The rest of the album’s repertoire was chosen from Peterson’s vast recorded catalogue, including Lionel Hampton and Jeri Jones’s Je ne Sais Pas, for which Matley had the utmost honour of writing original French lyrics. The album also features a remarkable jazz-funk cover of Jorge Ben Hor’s Mas Que Nada, which Matley sings in Portuguese with added vocal harmonies for extra fun.

Matley recruited some of Montreal’s premier jazz talent for the project, including pianist Taurey Butler, bassist Morgan Moore, and drummer Richard Irwin. Also appearing on the album are her long-time pals pianist Paul Shrofel and guitarist Steve Raegele.

Throughout the album, Matley shines as a first-rate vocal stylist. Her contemporary sound is still deeply rooted in the jazz tradition, but is unafraid of pushing the musical envelope. This anniversary album is dedicated to all Canadians. To quote Oscar, “People are Canada’s greatest resource.”

“Deanne is what the world is waiting for.” Ranee Lee

The Alberta Lounge was released worldwide on Friday, April 22nd 2022 on Barbette Records.

Originally an upbeat shuffle, Deanne partnered up with her good friend and fellow Montreal musician David Ryshpan and created an original “ballad” arrangement of the song. Over the past few months, Deanne has been working on it with her vocal coach Jennifer Meade helping her dig deeper into her essence as a vocalist. When asked multiple times why she didn’t change the pronoun from “she” to “he” while recording the song, her response was, “Because the reality is, it doesn’t matter, what matters is the message the lyrics are conveying, and that is one of deep connection, whatever the pronoun may be.” This cover is emotional, raw, and sure to captivate its listeners’ hearts.

The song was recorded at Boutique de Son in Montreal, QC by legend George Doxas with David Ryshpan on piano, Morgan Moore on upright bass, and Richard Irwin on drums.

Golden Earrings was Barbette Records third release of 2021. Deanne Matley’s version released Friday, June 25, 2021, “Golden Earrings” is a classic tune from 1947 written by Victor Young (music) and Ray Evans/Jay Livingston (lyrics). It also landed two Spotify Playlists.

Initially performed by Murvyn Vye in the 1947 romantic spy film of the same name, “Golden Earrings” tells the story of the jewelry’s mystical qualities. This haunting Gypsy Jazz song claims that if you wear golden earrings, love will come to you. The song has been covered by Great Artists such as Peggy Lee (who scored a hit in 1947), Bobby Darin (1964) and even Willie Nelson (1983).

Although originally referenced for celebrating a marriage, Makin’ Whoopee has become another term for Getting Freaky, Doing the Wild Thing, Dancing in the Sheets, and, yes, even Schnoodlypooping!
“Deanne is what the world is waiting for.” – Ranee Lee, renowned Canadian jazz vocalist

Deanne Matley’s voice and passion for jazz have taken her from her Alberta home to New York, France, Mongolia, and back. She sings standards, her own songs, and an impressive variety of covers with combos large and small, including Calgary’s Prime Time Big Band. Her previous four albums, with songs ranging from jazz standards to pop covers and Christmas favourites, have garnered her Top 10 radio play across Canada and fans around the world. She divides her time between Calgary and Montréal, and is excited that Because I Loved will be launching in both cities.

Canadian jazz vocalist Deanne Matley’s fifth album, Because I Loved, is a tour-de-force, taking the listener on an emotional journey from despair to quiet contentment, with stops at red-hot passion and the excitement of new love along the way. Deanne recruited some of Montréal’s premier jazz talent for the project, including drummer Jim Doxas (who also produced the album), pianist Paul Shrofel, bassist Adrian Vedady, and guest vocalist Ranee Lee.

Because I Loved features four new tunes of Deanne’s to round out a songlist that includes saxophone legend Stanley Turrentine’s “Sugar,” the haunting “Forget Me”(written for the great Shirley Horn), and remarkable covers of songs by Journey (“Open Arms”) and Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors (“The Wine We Drink”).

Throughout, Deanne shines as a first-rate vocal stylist, deeply rooted in the jazz tradition but unafraid of pushing the envelope. Her seen-it-all authority permeates every cut. “This is an album about love, melancholy, and starting again … about relationships,” says Deanne. “It’s the album I’ve always dreamed of making,” www.becauseiloved.com

Calgary Vocalist Deanne Matley and Los Angeles guitarist Larry Koonse proudly announce the release of their debut CD, “Can’t Help Falling”, a Jazz album containing original arrangements of classic jazz standards in an intimate vocal/guitar duo setting. “Can’t Help Falling” is a direct expression of their deep connection and the respect they have for each other as musicians.

Influenced by giant jazz duo Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass, Deanne and Larry captivate with this beautiful collection of jazz standards. Deanne’s sensual voice is stripped naked, with only the translucent veil of Larry’s haunting guitar for cover. They play harmoniously, changing balance, transforming into each other then separating. Like yin and yang they move back and forth and then together again, cascading into a pure and simple musical delight.

From the gut wrenching “That Lucky Old Sun” to the smoky, soulful “Autumn Leaves,” this may be Matley’s best recording to date. “A voice like no other”, says Koonse, adding, “Deanne Matley has it all, unerring pitch, great timing, beautiful phrasing, and perhaps most importantly, an ability to wrap herself inside a lyric and deliver a compelling story. She is a world class artist that is destined for great things.”

“This album was created on a whim…kismet” says Matley. Born and raised in Calgary, Deanne Matley is a staple on the Calgary jazz and blues circuit. As the vocalist for one of the top Big Bands in Canada, she is in high demand allowing her to perform regularly year round. This is her fourth album.

Larry Koonse is a modern master of the jazz guitar. From being the first recipient of the USC Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies to multiple Grammy nominations, he has toured and recorded extensively with Mel Torme, Billy Childs, John Patitucci, Luciana Souza, Rod Stewart, Linda Ronstadt, Cleo Laine, Natalie Cole and many others. His solo guitar work was featured in “Crazy”, a film about the great guitarist Hank Garland.

Deanne’s debut CD, Stealin’ Blue, is a tasteful mix of Jazz, and Pop favorites performed live in an intimate vocal/piano duo setting.

Deanne, a native Calgarian, has captured the essence of her riveting performances on this album which features twelve distinctive tracks. Known for her emotional, sultry delivery and a pure tone that envelopes the listener in a warm embrace, Deanne’s sensibilities lie in her simple yet elegant style. Her approach is straight from the heart, a heart that is warm, vulnerable and genuine. Artists such as Frank Sinatra, Sue Raney, Coldplay, Hawksley Workman, Rufus Wainwright, Bette Midler and many others act as influences.

The powerful energy and immediacy she receives from performing before a live audience fuels her drive as a musician. Her debut album is that much more bold, electric with feeling, and honest because of her choice to record Stealin’ Blue live. Stealin’ Blue is an invitation to a quiet moment of magic.

“I opted for songs with melodies that challenged my emotional boundaries and pushed me to explore the soul.” A quote from Deanne describing the musical mix on the album infused with Jazz, Torch, Blues, Pop and Gospel styles.

There are many standout tracks on this recording, one of which is “My Funny Valentine”. It is given an almost intensely cinematic reading. Deanne starts off with a blank vocal tone that has rather intense overtones for the verse. At the chorus, a more suave, sophisticated voice is heard as a counterpoint to the opening character. The piano solo serves as a bridge, a resting place between this vocal conversation. The song ends; a screaming whisper.

Another is the Cyndi Lauper ballad “True Colors”. Drawing on his extensive classical and jazz training, this version starts with an extended piano solo inspired by many musical influences. Deanne’s interpretation of the melody is vulnerable, passionate and real; emphasizing the song’s message of living authentically. The song’s unique ending has become a trademark part of this duo’s repertoire.

Stealin’ Blue is an album of ballads. It is for lovers. It is for intimate moments. It is for listening.
