Bei Mir Bist Du Schon (To Me You’re Beautiful) is a popular Yiddish song from 1932 written by Jacob Jacobs (lyricist) and Sholom Secunda (composer)  and was Barbette Records’ first release of 2022. Deanne Matley’s traditional, swinging version was released on Friday, January 7, 2022, and it also landed the Spotify Playlist “Vocal Jazz.”

Initially written for a Yiddish language comedy musical, I Would If I Could (Men Ken Lebn Nor Men Lost Nisht), the song became a worldwide hit in 1937 when recorded by The Andrews Sisters with English lyrics written by Sammy Cahn and Saul Chaplin. Since then, the song has been covered by Great Artists such as Ella Fitzgerald,  Rudy Vallée, Tommy Dorsey, June Christy and many more.

Deanne’s original Bei Mir Bist Du Schon arrangement was recorded off the floor at The King Eddy in Calgary, AB by Dave Horrocks with Jon Day on piano, Jeremy Coates on upright bass, Tyler Hornby on drums, and Cedric Blary on clarinet.

“Electric Love” was Barbette Records’ fifth release of 2021.  Deanne Matley’s version was released Friday, August 13, 2021, “Electric Love” is a Jazz/Pop Cover initially written and performed by the group called Børns in 2014.

Originally an upbeat shuffle, Deanne partnered up with her good friend and fellow Montreal musician David Ryshpan and created an original “ballad” arrangement of the song. Over the past few months, Deanne has been working on it with her vocal coach Jennifer Meade helping her dig deeper into her essence as a vocalist. When asked multiple times why she didn’t change the pronoun from “she” to “he” while recording the song, her response was, “Because the reality is, it doesn’t matter, what matters is the message the lyrics are conveying, and that is one of deep connection, whatever the pronoun may be.” This cover is emotional, raw, and sure to captivate its listeners’ hearts.

The song was recorded at Boutique de Son in Montreal, QC by legend George Doxas with David Ryshpan on piano, Morgan Moore on upright bass, and Richard Irwin on drums.

Palm Tree Party was Barbette Records’ fourth release of 2021. Deanne Matley’s original was released Friday, July 16, 2021, “Palm Tree Party” feat Azawka is an Original Pop/Dance Tune written by herself and Alexander Cook (Azawka).

The song of the summer! Released on Deanne’s Dad’s 70th Birthday, this pop/dance original was written and recorded specifically for the summer, especially this year as the world starts to open up again. It encourages the listeners to smile, sing, dance and PARTY! Karen Berry of Bassburn Dance Fit has also created fun choreography for all levels making the dance accessible to everyone.

Famous international artist Franky Selector recorded their original at his studio in Old Montreal, QC, using Alexander’s beats from his Novation Circuit and additional live in-studio percussion. The lyrics for the verse rhymed by Azawka, and the chorus sung by Deanne came together quickly and effortlessly. The duo had many laughs, laying down the track envisioning the song playing at resorts worldwide. It is a simple tune but a catchy one and is sure to have listeners humming the hook long after the track ends.

Golden Earrings was Barbette Records third release of 2021. Deanne Matley’s version released Friday, June 25, 2021, “Golden Earrings” is a classic tune from 1947 written by Victor Young (music) and Ray Evans/Jay Livingston (lyrics).  It also landed two Spotify Playlists.

Initially performed by Murvyn Vye in the 1947 romantic spy film of the same name, “Golden Earrings” tells the story of the jewelry’s mystical qualities. This haunting Gypsy Jazz song claims that if you wear golden earrings, love will come to you. The song has been covered by Great Artists such as Peggy Lee (who scored a hit in 1947), Bobby Darin (1964) and even Willie Nelson (1983).

As performing has been put on hold, Deanne is grateful to have had the opportunity, between lockdowns, to get in the studio and collectively create with her fellow musicians, masks and all.

99 Steps was Barbette Records’ second release of 2021 by Deanne Matley and is an original Pop tune written and composed by fellow Calgarian Songwriter Anthony Burbidge.

“One yes at a time. No matter how wide the hurt inside. One yes at a time.” 

Five years ago, after a difficult separation from her now ex-husband, Deanne found herself regularly sitting in the pews at Unity Calgary. It was her Sunday solitude, a place where she found a home in the comforts of a non-denominational spiritual community. One particular Sunday, Anthony, the musical director, performed this song. It moved Deanne instantly to tears. She knew in her heart that she had and would record it one day.

“One step at a time. No matter how high the mountain I climb. One step at a time.” 

A few years later, while attending music school in Montreal, Anthony had given her permission to record the tune. She connected with her good friend Paul Shrofel, and they created their original arrangement in his home studio. Not knowing the exact time to release it, the song has sat in the vault until now.

“One day at a time. No matter how deep the pain inside. One day at a time.” 

Deanne chose to release this track around the one-year mark of the pandemic to inspire healing. The song is about hope, and although one may be struggling and can’t predict the future, one is never alone.

Il y a cinq ans, après une séparation difficile avec son ex-mari, Deanne s’est retrouvée régulièrement assise sur les bancs de l’église Unity à Calgary. C’était sa solitude dominicale, un endroit où elle a trouvé une maison dans le confort d’un lieu spirituel non confessionnel. Although originally referenced for celebrating a marriage, Makin’ Whoopee has become another term for Getting Freaky, Doing the Wild Thing, Dancing in the Sheets, and, yes, even Schnoodlypooping! It has been covered by many greats such as Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and of course, who can forget, Michelle Pfeiffer’s version in the film “The Fabulous Baker Boys. One of the best mother and son songs! Love Him Forever was inspired by Deanne’s experiences as an in-demand wedding performer, and her realization that there are plenty of songs to choose from when it comes to Father-Daughter dances, but few that highlight the special relationship between Mother and Son.

This emotional piece, co-written with Jon Day, is broken down into three elements – a mother’s internal conversation with her soon to be daughter-in-law, her self-reflection on how much her son means to her, and finally, a conversation with her son to remind him of all the things she has taught him about the meaning of love.

The perfect mother-son dance song!  One that has now been performed live at multiple weddings and each time has brought the room to tears.
