My latest album “The Alberta Lounge” was inspired by the great Oscar Peterson. It wouldn’t be an album inspired by O.P without paying homage to one of his most significant composition: “Hymn to Freedom”. The lyricist of this special piece, Harriette Hamilton, was quoted saying that “all the lyrics had to do was express in very simple language the hope for unity, peace and dignity for mankind.” Though simple, these lyrics have touched the hearts of people all over the world. In fact, “Hymn to Freedom” was so culturally impactful that it became the anthem of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960’s.
When I decided to make this album, I knew that I had to show my profound respect for the impact that Oscar Peterson has had on the world by recording my version of this powerful song. Please enjoy my version of “Hymn to Freedom” by Oscar Peterson, with lyrics by Harriette Hamilton.
A version like no other, it’s haunting yet still keeps the message at the forefront. The beautiful ethereal ending leaves you in an emotional yet reflective state.
